Blackjack: Dead or Alive is almost done

Almost done, ladies and gents. We're in the edits and I'm giving me another month or two until it's DONE and published.

Just a year late.

I've been pushing it of late, hoping to match the release dates of Villain and Wayward, but it's starting to look like end of May, early June.

The good news is that his sucker is more of the fun Blackjack we all fell in love with in book one, and less of the mopey wuss from book two. Wayward was something he had to go through, and I make no apologies. Dale wouldn't have made it to here without the craziness of book two. In most movies, they fast forward through the part where the anti-hero has to look at himself critically, and admit that he has flaws to overcome. It's usually a quick shot of Matt Damon staring into the horizon dramatically. I wanted the exploration, though, to see where he was going to lead us in the stumbling next steps after a hard fall. As you saw in the initial sequence of Wayward, sometimes we have to hit rock bottom before we can gather our feet beneath us, and in Blackjack's case, it took a mind prison where he had few if any inhibitions for him to see how far he had fallen.

The next step is what this book is about. What do we do when we realize that we're flawed humans, and the hard work to seek redemption is ahead of us. I love how Blackjack confronts his fate in this book. I'd love to think that faced with a similar hard path that I'd have his balls, and his courage.

Blackjack is still Blackjack, though, and no journey with our lovable villain is ever without it's twists and turns...

  3. Honestly it bothers me when you refer to the second book as not being as good as the first. I loved both books and have read each several times. Don't sell yourself short. Regardless I can't wait for the "next step".

  4. Mike/Chuck/Richard, thanks for being so patient. The book is now out of my hands and in those of my editor/co-writer, who will hopefully turn my gibberish into something legible. His first comments were: "I think I understand what you're trying to say here..." though he used like 30 periods for his elipsis, as if trying make a point. A point lost on my feeble mind.

Blackjack 3 has been a difficult task, and now done, I should be worn out. I should be exhausted. But I'm not. Instead, I'm revitalized and working every day. If B3 did anything it's teach me to be writer, to get it done, and for that I'm thankful for the process. It didn't seem so positive a year or so back, when my favorite thing to ask my editor was, "Do you think they'll actually come to my house and kill me if I don't finish this book?"

I'm being facetious, of course, but for awhile there, the mountain seemed quite tall from the base. Anyone remember Frank Miller's awesome Daredevil 190?

As far as progress, did you guys notice how I'm talking about B3 in retrospect? Cause I'm finished writing it. The manuscript is in my editor's hands, who tells me he'll complete the edit in May, "probably." Between one thing and another, I suspect we'll get dragged into the first weeks of June, but there you have it, a semi-firm date. Well, more flaccid than firm.

I have to thank Amazon for making the submission process so smooth and painless. Without their hard work, I'd be stuck for weeks formatting the book as I did with Villain. Once I get the edited manuscript, uploading the book will take minutes. Amazon usually takes 12-24 hours reviewing the submission, but I won't say it's up until they're done with it.

Niklas, I know. I'm dying to get you guys the book, but trust me that you want to wait for my editor, Josh Hoade, to do his thing.

And Andy, you're right, and I'm sorry. Enough shitting on book 2 just cause a few didn't like it. I won't do it again. Thanks for the slap upside the head. I needed it. That being said, Blackjack was kind of a mopey wuss for the first 2/3s or so of Wayward and I think he's more fun when he has a plan or scheme, whether it succeeds or fails. He's a ton of fun when he has a villain to beat, as in book 3, where we take on the one loose thread in the whole arc, Mr. Haha...
