I just took a moment to reread that scene, for the first time in almost a year and wow, that was pretty good. Yeah, THAT'S what book three's going to be about, especially, the last part.
Yeah it was good. Can't wait to read third book. Hoping you explore the whole exposed to the Lightbringers thing and the event's effects on Blackjack's abilities though whatever you do I'm sure it'll boggle the mind and have readers begging for more.
Hey Ben have you read the Wearing the Cape series by Marion G. Harmon? Its another superhero type series that's really good. Seeing as the two of you write the same kinda fiction I'd like to read your opinion.
I don't know why DiBs, but I've kept away from other super books like the plague. The one I read, and that motivated me to put Blackjack together, is Austin Grossman's "Soon I Will Be Invincible." Hell, if he ever reads Blackjack, he might kick me in the balls over the whole Dr. Impossible/Dr. Retcon thing.
As far as the Lightbringers, Devil Heart, I'm kind of writing them out of book three. Yeah, I know. It's not to stretch it out and milk the cow. Not at all. I just confused everything by throwing them in. Remember a few weeks back? I was all hardcore about it, LETS DO IT NOW! It didn't work out. It actually makes a mess of things, when I have plenty of already established ideas going on that I can use to increase tension.
First of all, and most importantly, Haha is out there. I don't want to relegate that threat to something secondary, and I doubt that Haha would listen to reason if Blackjack asked him to put aside their "thing" for the greater good (to fight the Lightbringers). Hell, Haha would probably aid the Lightbringers if things got a little tough for them...in order to make the "show" more interesting and to draw social commentary from the mistakes and errors of Blackjack and his boys.
Second, about 1300 villains broke out of Utopia prison. They're out there, causing havoc, and that's a great tool to show Blackjack's fumbling effort to become more than he was. I compound this threat by mentioning that some heroes chose to retire instead of face such overwhelming odds, and some major names will hang up their capes in book three. Put yourself in their shoes. I know Batman, Supes, Wolvie, all those guys, they'd fight to the last breath. Sure, they're 2 dimensional drawings (with zero percent body fat). Real people have other considerations, and it happens more often than any of us would care to admit that people who are witnesses to crimes chose silence of the danger of testifying against a monster in court. It's just not realistic to have everyone be 100% idealistic and, frankly, suicidal.
The third difficulty that I have to play with is all the canon that we've established in Villain and Wayward. I mean, Atmosphero's still out there. So's Epic. Are they going to play nice with Blackjack? I've also never resolved what happened to Global (I've got such a killer idea there), and though it's implied he died fighting the Callisto Lightbringer (the watcher), we haven't seen what became of Nostromo. There's also Lady Jade. She survived Hashima island (I never explicitly said she didn't, like with Apostle).
Then there's Delphi, Serpentis and my favorite, Black Razor. How would they feel about a good guy Blackjack? Razor for one won't be happy. And I hinted that Delphi and Serpentis are in a relationship, and I made it pretty clear that Dale had been involved with Delphi at some point (why she doesn't answer his calls in book 1. There's lots there to have fun with.
I would be sooooo pissed at my brother if he dissed me like Dale's did to him. It would be cool to learn more about the family. Maybe have Blackjack bitchslap his step uncle. Oh what about his real mom. Who was she?
Maybe save the Lightbringers for book 4. Huh. Or 5. There's a lot you can work with that wont make the series stale.
Hmmmm redemption. Hard to find hard to get but when you do it makes all the sh#t worth it. Keep it up Ben. I teared up a little reading that.
