Off and running

Not an official update, just a note to let you go that we're back in pro-mode, after a lot of nonsense at the end of the year.

But first isn't Blackjack, I'm afraid. We're finalizing the first few episodes of Interstellar Overdrive. I know, I suck, but I made that commitment to my partner (he wants his name out there on the cover of something), and we were so close to being done that it made no sense to shelve it.

The good thing is that I'm done with IO for the most part. I'm waiting on Josh to do his magic on the edits and I have someone polishing the episodes (who's sloooow), but in the meantime, starting Monday, I'm on Blackjack 95% of the time. The last 5% is to input changes from the Editor and to do the formatting on IO1 when she's done. Then put it up.

IO isn't Blackjack, it's a shoot-em up space western that has more in common with The Dirty Dozen and Mass Effect than to the previous superhero stuff we've done before. It's also 3rd person, so I don't have go agonize over feelings every fifth page.

As far as Blackjack Three, the title is in flux. Blackjack Hero doesn't full encompass what I have planned for him, so don't freak out if I bounce a few ideas here in the next few weeks. The good news is that act one is basically done, save for a few scenes. I'm going to tackle that stuff first, give it a quick polish, then put it up so the guys that follow the blog can get a first look of where we're going with it. It starts with him trying his hardest to become a hero, but you know how Blackjack can muck up just about anything, so things will go South fast.

Oh, and I'm going to do another contest. I need a villain, and you guys are going to design him. It's kind of a blank slate (unlike the previous contest where I just needed a new name). The only rules are that it's someone that can solo Blackjack and that it be someone that will pose a viable threat to the whole world. Yeah, I'm looking for a Dr. Doom/Magneto/Ra's al Ghul. It doesn't matter with what kind of powerset. If you come up with the winner, I'll not only give you full credit in the book, but I'll give you a free episode 1 (in mobi/pdf/epub) of Interstellar Overdrive, and a free copy of Blackjack Three when it comes out.

So, any ideas?

  1. My idea is a little odd so bear with me. This is not a super villain in the traditional sense that he can just use brute force. Basically you have a hero that can perceive the absolute truth about anything. Effectively his primary ability allows him to understand any attack that is coming his way; see the truth in any lie; and understand the concept behind something inherently. Tack on B class strength, endurance, and speed and that does it for the power set. The ability to solo blackjack comes from not only his ability to see through attacks as they come but additionally the ability to perceive the weakness of the opponent he is fighting. Aside from that this villain is highly intelligent (think the person who sees the moves on a chess board ten moves ahead of where your thinking) with a strong amoral streak. To clarify this is not a tragic past or man child like blackjack. This individual has simply come to, what is to him, the logical conclusion that the world needs a catalyst to continue growth. Given the fictional universe this happens in I suppose knowledge of the light bringers would be the motivation. Or perhaps simply the belief that humanity is on the path to stagnation and destruction without such a catalyst.

Think along the lines of almost an anti-hero is his own way. This individual believes that for the world, and by extension humanity, to survive it must grow. In the pursuit of this growth this individual has an absolute belief that the ends justify the means. The methods employed by this villain are not necessarily overt, but rather an unseen hand that manipulates events to his liking. Yet in the end his powerset is more than a match for whoever he fights. After all how do you fight someone can not only understand you weakness and think ten moves ahead of you, but is additionally amoral enough to be utterly ruthless. This individual is not the type of villain who will sit there and gloat, but rather just kill you and walk away.

Thoughts anyone has on this type of character would be appreciated for my own knowledge in using this arch-type in fan-fiction.

    1. Okay, you guys are going to so much trouble with this, I'm going to comment on these individually.

This guy you describe gets me thinking: first of all, where's he been all these years? Well, there's two possible answers to that. One can be that he's young, he's only now coming into his own so he hasn't had a chance to stretch his legs, as it were. It's kind of what I'm doing with the "Lilith" character, so I'd either have to reimagine her or it wouldn't work. The second reason we haven't heard from him (other than the author didn't have you advising him prior) we can tie to his powerset. Since he's playing the game of chess ten pieces ahead, he's been waiting until the right moment.

And what's going on right now in the world we've established? 1300+ villains escaped from Utopia, emboldening this guy. This would be someone new, someone we haven't heard of yet or barely mentioned, maybe in passing, dismissively. He's easy to discount, because that's what he wants, he's never made a play because he has no plans to fail.

We did the whole hero-gone-villain thing in Wayward with Lord Mighty, but he was a psychopath to begin with, a decadent soul made corrupt by power, ruined in spirit when he has his one moment to display bravery but instead runs like a coward (vs the lightbringer that kills nostromo).

But a guy like this might even become a hero in good times. I mean, who wants to get punched in the face by Epic or Apogee? He/she might be dissatisfied with his "lot in life" and might wait for an opportunity to come around.

In many ways, this person is more dangerous than the traditional Dr. Doom/Thanos, because he's a dear friend until one day he destroys you and everything you love.

      I'm really liking this guy.

    2. Your comments on what you have planned have help me a bit so I can expand a bit more on things like age. As for age I would guess he would be somewhere between 24-32, only because the longer a web like his extends (in terms of years) the greater the chance of discovery. My reasoning is primarily because of the characters intellect. This characters intellect is something he was born with rather than tied into his powerset.

As to where he has been I believe that the simple answer would be everywhere. I like your idea about the utopia breakout emboldening the villain to become more active which would finally cause him to come public in a way. In my opinion to find out where this character has been you would simply have to look for conflicts that caused some societal or technological progress. People may have never been aware he was there but that would be the places he could have been.

As to the psychopath concept I admit it comes across as that but it was not my intention to portray this character as a psychopath. A sociopath certainly but not a psychopath. I am not sure if you are familiar with the Expanded Star Wars universe but there was a character named Jacen Solo. He got a vision of a dark future where the galaxy was burning and did many terrible things to prevent that. The last vision he got before he died was a galaxy at peace. This character is along those same lines in that even though some might call him a monster there is a greater goal behind his actions. He is not a psychopath but rather an anti-hero in his own way. In fact the best way I can describe it would be a big picture view. If you tracked his actions you would find that while some people died the overall benefit saved far more lives than was lost. I am not sure I have done a great job defining the difference I am trying to create but that is where I was coming from.

As to him becoming a hero, honestly I had not even considered that. But I really liked the idea because it made me think "yeah dummy you completely missed that." I would say that if the would was in danger this character would certainly move to help because it fits with his overall goals.

I guess the final thoughts is that this character was inspired by the characterizations of Jacen Solo (Star Wars) and Raymond Reddington (The Blacklist). Thank you for your response, it made me see this character in ways I had previously missed.

  2. Damn! That's a great character. But does he fit as a villain for Blackjack. Id like to see a villian similar to Blackjack. A snarky, intelligent come from nothing kind of guy. A guy who came from the worst of pits but didn't lose the love of life. But to get by hes had to be brutal, maybe that's his name. But through all this he has one thing. One thing that to him makes everything hes done worth it. A child. A child hes kept safe and sheltered from that part of his life. He'd do anything for her.

As for his power id like to see him weilding his very blood. In battle a wound is nothing but more weapons. Needles, blades, spikes oh my! He can use his blood to augment his strength and durability. Healing and stamina is a nonissue. Fights with him would be BRUTAL.

    1. Okay, here's where you start scaring me DiBs :)

This guy would be perfect as an addon to the whole Lilith storyline I'm doing in the book. How about instead of protecting a child, he's protecting her, you know, because they're together. And Brutal would be her bodyguard/protector but he'd get jealous of Blackjack when she approaches him about quitting the life. In part, she's worried about Brutal, and the things he does for her. In a sense, he's using her as an excuse to channel his hatred and anger.

This would make that whole part of the story more interesting, and the powerset you're describing is nothing like anything we've done before in the series, and the more he hurts Blackjack, the stronger he becomes, doesn't he?

This guy also works with my plans for act two in Haha's Arcade...oh shit, I said too much.

      Delete
    2. Dude I love that you love my idea. And your right the love interest would be better than a child. You could throw out love and jealousy and denial and self hatred and wishing for a better life. The is story is evolving before our eyes.

      Delete
    3. See if you like this. As Brutal before a battle you inject yourself with all kinds of things poisons, sedatives and so on, but because of your power you can hold it in your veins without harm. During the battle through a cut you form a projectile and throw it. in mid air it turns to mist and squirms into your opponent thereby administering the drug. How sick would that be!

  3. I would like to make a suggestion or two, but also seek a bit of clarification on the exact kind of option you are looking for. Basically, someone who can "Solo Blackjack" could have a range of possibilities, from "Crush him mercilessly" to "slug it out to a draw". I ask bc. there are certain power-sets that would be more than capable of going to toe-to-toe with him and winning, but I assume that you'd like one equivalent to him, for the sake of the story? Based on the answer, you could go a number of routes with this...

For example, I would think any sort of mental-based skill set of sufficient power would beat Blackjack 9 out of 10 times... while he's tough, strong and smart, he's also not necessarily an emotional rock. A strong enough telepath would tie him in knots before he could throw a punch (in point, this kind of happened at the end of Book 2, when the mental-based hero locked him up in 10 seconds or less.) Throw the ability to create illusions/shape the perceptions of others and someone like that could have Blackjack living in a fantasy world before he knew what hit him. Not the most original talent, but if you wanted to play to his weakness, that'd be it. He's more or less totally vulnerable to mental attacks at this point (although I suppose you could have him invent something equivalent to Magneto's helmet to protect himself if you go that route, but that's kind of been done already, yeah?)

Another skillset that probably would dominate him is someone who could become insubstantial at will... they could literally float through him, and leave behind whatever destructive substance they felt like inside his body. He'd probably have a tough time recovering from a hand grenade or a bottle of acid that someone left in his chest cavity, no? Again, he'd likely need help of some sort to take on someone he can't touch.

For my money, I think a comparable match would be someone who is a life drainer... you could spin it so they get stronger and tougher, heal, or gain whatever relevant power characteristics of whomever they touch... that would be hell on wheels to fight, and negate Blackjack's brawling advantage (he'd get weaker the longer that he fought him, so would have to think creatively about how to neutralize him). Also, you could power up this kind of "Vampire" character as needed by having him run across other heros/villains he could devour over time (and/or give him a chunk of Blackjack's powers if they tangle initially w/o Blackjack understanding who he is fighting)

Anyway, you may get better responses if you clarify - are you looking for someone that would require a full team to take on (i.e., someone Blackjack is ill-equipped to take on solo), or someone that is more of a personal nemesis that Blackjack has to take on without help.

    1. You're right, its kind of easy to make a guy to take Blackjack down. It doesn't have to be anything all that interesting or difficult.

Jean Grey, circa 1963, fresh into the X-men, could lift Blackjack 15 feet into the air and he'd be immobilized as long as she wants. With a little more experience, she could lobotomize him.

We did that in book two with Coach, who takes him out in an instant, but I'm not tempted to have him invent a device to protect himself against that. I always found Magneto's helmet a silly plot device, since he faces Xavier so often and since they made Prof. X so ridiculously powerful.

The life drainer idea is pretty novel, and I can only think of one character in fiction that used that as a major power, Salvatore's villain Artemis Entreri with his vampiric dagger. But how about mixing this guy with DiBs' Brutal character? It's a perfect match isn't it, since he can manipulate blood itself? We could have some fun at Twilight's expense too, making a guy that's an antithesis to Edward Cullen's vampire, a true creature of the night, vicious and savage.

    2. Just please don't let him sparkle. I implore you not to let him sparkle!

      Delete
    3. Hell no! Make him sparkle! Just make it happen because of the sun glistening off of blood beading on his skin just before an attack!

  4. A new villain... For my suggestions, I already gave them a few posts ago on another update :P. However, if you want someone who matches up with Blackjack....
    Suggestions:
    1. A doppelganger character who can perfectly mimic a metas abilities (but also harnesses their inner demon as well, making the doppelganger extra vicious); could also have him be able to become a persons greatest weakness/fear although I imagine that kind of self-reflecting portrayal might be a bit odd with blackjack.
    2. Have him take on the Light bringer from Jupiter/Saturn.
    3. Daemos, the Heretic, Azazel, the Invoker-- a zealot with divine powers able to smite his foes with blasphemous words and unholy power manifested as black-violet energy. His very presence(and utter zealotry) taint the world around him, allowing him to bend the fabric of realitt to his will to a certain degree(matter manipulation, temporal manipulation, spacial folding, etc.) His armor, forged from the blackest souls, is neigh on impenetrable, and makes him impervious to all but the strongest blows while his sword, Nightbringer is forged from the darkest energies of Creation, so perverted and twisted its very existence makes the world around it shudder in repugnance and nothing alive(save, obviously, for its wielder) can withstand its anathemic touch.
    4. Someone who can create and control illusory forces/armies of partial or complete mass and can manifest weapons and armor for himself (think evil Green Lanterns crossed with a suoernatural Mysterio).
    5. An assassin who can percieve the weakest point of any person or object, possesses extreme reflexes and speed but mild strength and has a form of battle-precognizance (he can see things a few moments into the future almost without error and predict his opponent's movement/actions with unerring accuracy.
    6. I would revisit the pages and loom at my description for Geist. He would also be a very good suggestion I would like to put forth.
    Thank you for listen-err-reading.

    1. Okay, let's tackle this one at a time.

So I had this guy already in the book. In fact, I'm a page or two from introducing him. Fighting this guy is the end of act one of the book, and it marks Blackjack taking a big step away from what he was. Except my guy wasn't as good as this guy. I have the name and look already, but if you'll allow me, the character you describe kind of explains everything.

      2. Have him take on the Light bringer from Jupiter/Saturn.

It killed Valiant and later Nostromo. I thought you liked Blackjack...

This is pretty awesome. Now mix everything you said with the first reply to my original post (the 6296740c fellow) and we might just have a winner. He gave us the motivation, the character, you've given us the flavor and powerset. Now I need a killer name. I think the four you mentioned are used in some form or another.

      4. Someone who can create and control illusory forces/armies of partial or complete mass and can manifest weapons and armor for himself (think evil Green Lanterns crossed with a suoernatural Mysterio).

Holy shit, I like it, but this guy would take over the world in 15 seconds. Maybe for book four?

      5. An assassin who can percieve the weakest point of any person or object, possesses extreme reflexes and speed but mild strength and has a form of battle-precognizance (he can see things a few moments into the future almost without error and predict his opponent's movement/actions with unerring accuracy.

Add to the Daemos concept, the idea of him being a precog, or like they do Sherlock Holmes in the Robert Downey Jr. movies.

      6. I would revisit the pages and loom at my description for Geist. He would also be a very good suggestion I would like to put forth.

I'll look it up and add it to the list, but I'd say we have a winner if we mix your idea with that of 629-number.

  5. Wow you guys! You put way more thought into yours than I did. But while rereading Wayward I couldn't help but think Ben should bring back Atmosphero as a bad guy. Maybe his hatred of Blackjack made him snap and go villian.

    1. Not sure I want to do Atmo goes villain even though, like you guys, I'd love to see Blackjack roflstomp him once again. To be honest, like with Epic, I'd rather see them be professional and even cordial with Blackjack. That would be worse than a punch to the face.

    2. Your right. Having them admit that Blackjack is the TRUE hero would be so much sweeter than a beating.

  7. Had some thoughts about Brutal.

    1. If hes gonna drain someone's life he would need to pierce their skin and gain access to their blood. Slowly he would pull their blood into himself gaining a temporary power boost if they are a super.

    2. If Brutal gains a power up from a super that doesn't mean he knows how to use it. Ive never understood how the power leach character could steal someones power and just KNOW how to use it. Something like super strength or invulnerability sure but ANY of the mental powers would take focus and years of training to know how to use. So if Brutal does gain a power up he'd probably want to avoid some poses or things could become chaotic....but maybe that's exactly what's needed.

    3. Now lets talk about weakness. Brutal is no where near a GLOBAL threat. He could easily be taken down by a teltelekinetictelepath or telekinetic. He also would be helpless against a super with ice powers. If you drop his body temperature far enough his blood would become to thick to use. But against a brawler like Blackjack he just might be able to beat him. In a fight Brutal only gets stronger by augmenting his power with the Blackjacks blood. So Blackjack would have to use his head to beat Brutal maybe with and anticoagulent.

  8. New names for that character on 3.... Hmmm..... This will be tough but I shall spew forth a couple names to see if you like any.
Tartarus, Hades, or Thanatos (referring to misery, suffering, and damnation, the keeper of the dead and Death itself, respectively as well as a person of god-like power).
    Blasphemus(Latin for Blasphemy)
Revile (already been done by Jack Blank adventures series but it would fit this character better)
Anathema ( if you change the character into a female--Lilith's twin, perhaps?)
    Desecrator
    Malice
    Renegade
Heterodox(*)--odd name but it fits the image
    Schism

    Nihilus (like nihilist)
    Rend
    Sunder
    Scythe (verb not noun)
I feel most of these are... Inadequate but hopefully it'll help. Let me know

  9. How about Redeamer? For how could humanity be worthy of god's love but through suffering? If they are to be worthy than I shall deliver unto them all the misery there is to be had and those that survive shall know glory.

How about that? Spin it so by his way of thinking he's doing what needs to be done. That kinda guy would stop until someone made him.

  13. Yes I can and the book was actually damn good. Kinda like Mr. Bequer but with supernaturals instead of metahumans. PS can't wait for the new Kate Daniels and Dresden novels

  14. Alright two ideas to bounce off of you
    1. Naming the book: Since you said that "hero" doesn't fully capture his journey from a villain to a hero, how about Blackjack Redeemed or
    Blackjack Redemption for titles?
    2. Super Villain name and abilities: Not exactly sure what to say for this one, but the best I can come up with at the moment is a person, male/female, that can change his/her shape and features into anything they can imagine with only a thought, and the only limitation would be their creativity. They could turn into motherflipping Cthulhu for crying out loud. As for a name how about...
    Morphos
    Antithesis
    Mutagen
    Apophis

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ok, I admit I was hasty of book 6. It turned out to be a good read. However the comparison between Declan and Ceaco with Chris and Tanya would be extremely similar but different enough that I didn't get annoyed. I just hope book 7 comes out quick.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Do you think Conroe will combine the story arcs or keep them seperate? I really did like Declan and Ceaco even though they were REALLY similar to Chris and Tanya, so I'm not really sure what I want to happen. All I know is that I want MORE!

That goes for you to Ben!

    ReplyDelete
  17. double agreed and i think that perhaps Conroe might blend Gillian's attempts to subdue Declan into the story line, yes.

  18. Does it have to be a super villian? What about somebody who is/was a hero, but isn't willing to let Blackjack be part of the hero group and sets out to do something about it.

Power set could be something as follows:

Able to personify a single person's emotions and or personal demons/fears. The stronger emotion/passion somebody has the more powerful the manifestation(s) would be. For instance he would be able to make something immensely powerful from somebody who is in a fit of rage, somebody who is deeply in love, has a powerful phobia. Can take what you love (son, daughter, wife, girlfriend, etc.) manifest, and that is what you would be fighting against. It would still be him/her (person who created it) fighting as the manifestation, but the person they are fighting would perceive it to be someone or something else.

While very powerful in one on one combat, he is only able to use his powers on one person at a time. Also week against emotionless people or people who only have weak emotions. You could offset this by making him smart as other people have already said.
