Sorry, was on my way out the door when I felt a nervous pang, due to neglecting the boards.
Let's see, I have some time now. Let's try to answer some questions make some comments:
1. My part of IO is done from Episodes 1 through 7 (most of 7) and the guys are working on edits. Josh is on 5, Len is on 3. Len is slow, but we love him. Seriously, the guy's doing a lot with a little. Basically, I'm clear through the middle of next year to spend all my time on Blackjack 3.
2. IO is going to run 12 episodes in it's present story arc, then we'll do some other stories based on some of the characters we introduce - which are a lot. So far Dennison Vance looks to be the prime candidate for IO series 2.
3. There's three POVs we're exploring; Alec, Mistral and Galan.
4. Yes, I'm Ev, goddammit
5. Yes, Alec's Josh
6. We're going to do 12 issues at about 6 weeks between each (to give Len time - the guy is slow). If the schedule conspires against us, we might do a few without him. They'll be the crappy issues everyone claims we're throwing out as filler.
7. Yes, Blackjack is suffering because of IO, but I'm using this time to organize the last two acts. And I'm not redoing the whole thing, I really like what I have so far. It's not a crisis of confidence, or a panic attack - that part I already got through. The last 1/3 of the book is set in stone...now I need to put it to paper.
8. Heart of the Jungle. That'll come after Blackjack 3. I'm not even talking about it until after B3 is done. I'm not even thinking about it. Every time I do...
9. B3's title is looking more like "Dead or Alive," than "Fugitive" or "Hero." I'm taking a radical turn with the guy in the last two acts which I think will be more in line with what we like about Blackjack.
9a. No he's not going back to Shard World. I get it, you guys hate Shard World. I'll write a Shard World epic in my next life.
10. I'm having the time of my life with Interstellar. IO is more fun that anything I've done before. I tried an experiment with Blackjack, which was having an unreliable narrator, and I've learned a lot from the effort. But it's so much better to have a third person view of things. I don't know, it's more fun.
11. B3 is in first person.
12. B4 maybe in third person.
13. Is Guardians of the Galaxy the best sci-fi movie of all time? I think so. I've seen it four times. I might go again tomorrow.
14. Dave Bautista as Blackjack. Yeah, I'm gonna call his agent. Him or Momoa. Still can't think of better than Jessica Biel for Apogee. What do you guys think?
15. I gotta go, putting together a scene with Blackjack and Apogee in a night-time bonfire listening to folkloric songs by Romanian Gypsies at Castle Black - just before the big fight with Mr. Haha and the Impossibles 2.0.
I'm glad to hear things are working out for you, and I am looking forward to just what direction you send Blackjack on.
But that aside I have a question.
I don't recall reading it in any of your blogs, so I'll just ask; why did you and your mates choose to go with a Serial format for IO? Why move away from just wrapping it all up in a novel? I have purchased the first part of IO and liked it. But I dislike a interrupted story. Hell I struggle with novels in a series as is, but at least I feel sated with a novel to chew on. I am curious, was it just the easier way to write? Is it more economics?
Questions aside I will buy all of IO, but I'll likely end up waiting for a few parts to be out before I buy'em up so I can read them.
Thanks for your comments, and your question - it brings up a good point. My reasons for writing are two-fold, to unleash my creative urges and to make a little money. At the same time, I detest what some companies and individuals do to extract every last cent out of people, especially at a time when things are as tough as ever. I want to make my writing a successful venture, but not at the expense of others.
The idea with IO was to do something serialized, to spread out the effort. It turns out that the effort is just about the same as putting together a book. In the case of IO, we're doing 60-90 page issues, when combined making it a 700-900 page work. It's my version of doing a monthly comic book. We've had to extend our release dates to accommodate the new guy doing edits, but my intent is to have an ongoing story that can fill an hour of your life once a month. It started as an experiment, and it's become all-consuming. The financials of the thing even get more complicated because Amazon won't let me put it for less than 99 cents. Hell, I wanted to give the first issue away for free and they won't let me do that either. (I can trick them, I know now, by putting it for free on another vendor, like Goodreads or Apple, and they match it. I'm going to do that in the future with more of my works).
As far as making you wait for the story, it's sort of by design, sort of by accident. We were going pretty fast when we lent issue one to our friend to read. He's a writer himself, and came back with such interesting comments that we decided to invite him to the project. And the whole thing's become so much better as a result. I think Josh and I needed a third set of eyes to take the whole thing up to another level. But having Len Pimentel around means we're going slower. I tell you, I'm done through issue 7 (almost) and Josh is through 5. Believe me though, you'll appreciate the wait. Len's guidance has made all the difference.
I appreciate your patience with us, Mike, and all the other readers, and I think when the story of IO unfolds that it was worth the wait.
From what you said about B3, the title and the hint of possible events...i'm anticipating being blown away (maybe literally, Blackjack could always create another, better Nuke) and i highly doubt i or anyone will be disappointed. Also: Len sounds a lot like someone I know. She works at a slower pace than most people would do something but does it so well it makes up for it 10 times over.
