Greetings from Merrit Island!

Man, you guys should have seen the sunset we had over here. We were eating some salmon en papillote (wrapped in paper, lol) that my sister and I threw together and someone looked out the window - mind blown.

I always use this annual week-long getaway to get some work done. There's beach and sun and pool, but by 11 o'clock, midnight, I'm the only mouse stirring in the house we rent, and I always bring my laptop. Last year was a disaster, 7 days/0 pages, but this year I'm doing pretty good so far. It helps that I have the story fully broken down, where last year I was having a huge crisis of confidence, post-B2, and unsure about what I had for B3.

This year is different; I'm rocking along with the Alec POV and plan on finishing his entire arc by the time we head back to Miami.

I want to take a minute to thank G.R.R. Martin for inspiring me to do a split POV story. Reading the first book in his series blew my mind and sent me on this journey. Another story that had a huge influence was House of Cards, the recent Netflix edition. Watching Spacey chew that script was another paradigm shift for me, making me revisit the entire project. In any case, those are the two main inspirations to IO.

Moving forward, I'm writing the thing in consecutive order, each POV at a time, then I'll go back and interlace the whole thing. I just broke 700 Word pages, and I figure another 300 until I'm done - it'll be a good 2k Kindle pages when all is said and done. I have a full outline to keep me organized, but I'm finding so much more in each character that I didn't have before. This is one of the reasons we pulled it. Sure, it wasn't working as a serialized story, but also, I was discovering a lot about the characters that I wanted to go back and implement from the beginning.

For example, I never realized how important Mistral's father, and his legacy, were going to be to her character arc until I wrote it. Now I'm forced to go back and do some rewriting to backtrack a lot of cool things I've found out about her.

Going through this process makes me respect comic book writers so much more. They're operating on a small piece of the whole, and have to have a level of organization and discipline that I failed to have in my first serialized attempt. If I try it next time, I'll write the whole thing, THEN publish.

As far as when? It's a long term project, let's be realistic. I'm going to retain the previous two editors, and go with the same exact process, so don't expect IO to be done any time soon. I'll keep you up to date with my comings and goings, but I fully expect my next book (B4) to be done before IO ever sees a publication date.

Wait, did he say...WHAT DID HE SAY????

Yes, B4 is going to be next. It's the least I can do for you guys, who have waited so patiently while I fumbled with B3. I have the storyline ready for breakdown, and when Josh finishes editing B3 (and I'm done writing IO) we'll get hard at work making it happen.

So B4 is next, and I really want to get back into my April/May release slot. Damn...I said I wasn't going to talk about dates. It's probably not realistic to expect it so soon. Maybe the June/July thing works better.

Anyways, I have the following ideas for the title of B4:

Blackjack Messiah
Blackjack The Cult
Blackjack Lightbringer

One of the major realizations that I've come to while working on Blackjack is that the Lightbringers will be a major arc, but it won't be the end. So why wait? Let's get that arc started!

Cheers from the Sun and stay safe!

  1. Personally I am rather fond of Blackjack Messiah. It just has this ring to it.

  2. I like the title Blackjack Messiah. It sounds... right. Also, can you give a definite release date for B3?

  3. Maybe Blackjack Savior instead of Messiah. Messiah is just a really loaded word.

  4. Blackjack prophet? Blackjack Saint? How about Blackjack Unbound?

  5. Blackjack Messiah reminds me of Dune Messiah.. Blackjack Deliverer... Maybe... nothing really sounds good to me. How about card puns? Blackjack Double Down or Blackjack Suicidal Kings...anyways Hit me I'm in.

sorry, but none of those sound "catchy". i like Pat M's idea of Blackjack Unbound.
by the way, there's a series called "Light Bringer" & the 1st book's called "Black Prism". just dnt think it wld in best interest to go w/ that name idea.

  10. Some responses to your comments:
Kyle, Messiah does have a certain feet to it, doesn’t it? Especially since we’re planning to mock the whole thing. The idea is that Haha’s blog is now public knowledge, and with it so is all of the information from Shard World. Imagine what a mess that would cause…

Jack, no release date. “She’ll be ready when she’s ready, Cap’n, sir.”

Michael, Savior might work too, especially after the events of B3.

Pat, Prophet won’t work as well and neither will Saint, but Unbound gets me thinking. You know, I really had fun writing those scenes with the vampire witch Claire…

Andy, that’s really clever. Double Down. I’m going to use that somewhere, maybe for B5. The card stuff is great since we’re often getting bots dropping blackjack casino advertisements on this blog.

Hernan, my editor is rocking it as we speak, so don’t worry, B3 will be ready soon. As I’ve explained a few times, I’m not going to date it. I screwed that up before and I don’t want to do it until I’m 100% certain. It’s a bunch of bull to be told a date then have it fly by. I’m not doing it to you guys again. The Lightbringer series is going to be a blast. Josh and I plan to do it from a 3rd person perspective, bouncing around a few characters (Superdynamic? Apogee? Probably!), and it’ll be interesting to see Blackjack from other people’s POV. We’re probably going to go a different route with the name, if there’s something out there already called the Lightbringers…besides, that’s just what those villagers called it on Shard World – as translated by Dr. Zundergrub. The real beings may have a different moniker for themselves.

Chuck, I talk to Josh every day and I do my hardest to not pressure him. He’s thrown a few scenes at me to see how he’s doing and I’m really impressed. Again, this is more of a collaboration than 1-2, so expect it to sound a little different. I’m giving the editor a chance to express himself. The one benefit will be that things won’t sound all wonky. I from the USA, but I was raised abroad and learned English at the same time as I learned Spanish. I guess I’m still working out the kinks in my prepositions and dangling participles.

Puri, 5 days to September and I guarantee that he won’t finish before the first. That’s as much as I’ll say, hehe.

THEONLYHYDRASPOON (need all caps for the real effect), We’re doing this, brother/sister, we’re doing this. And I mean real, massive progress. I don’t want to pigeon hole myself again, even though we’re finalizing a story, rather than putting it together, so please be patient with me. I’d rather have you wait a little more than give you a date that I might have to miss. The good news is that the book is in its final stage. You’ll see it soon.

Irene Vodka, your name…I’m using it for something, bot-lady. I LOVE IT. As far as your harmful, maliware-laden website, I’ll pass. I’d rather blow my entertainment money on real Vodka and real whores. Oh, and keep sending me bot messages and I’ll honor THEONLYHYDRASPOON’s request and write your fictional casino getting blowed up, but good.

Hernan, You’re back! I love you man!

Chuck, You’re back too! Yes, I’m alive, thankyouverymuch. I might do a full-fledged update post tonight.

  11. I think I'd prefer some sleazy small time super villain be based in their cockroach-ridden casino and the destruction of the duo be just a side note somewhere. Thanks for the update, though.... glad all is well
